Thoughts: Forcing To Think Before You Honk

Driving is a magical, relaxing and terrible ordeal.

It’s magical when you’re on the road for the first time after getting your license, going wherever the road takes you. It’s relaxing when you’re driving down a long stretch of road taking in the scenery and feeling like you’re finally enjoying like. It’s terrible when you’re stuck in traffic, wondering why and how you got to this time and knowing you’re most likely late for work or whatever engagement you had at the end of your destination.

Driving is something different for everyone, some enjoy it, some don’t. I certainly do not, because I don’t like people, and people on the road are worse.  My main grudge is that drivers use their hooters for the most inane reasons.

Take any day in the morning trying to get to work, as soon as you get to a stop or an intersection you will hear someone hitting that horn two or three times because someone took a split second too long to get going. Best when they constantly hooting not knowing that the car right in front of them is behind 3 other cars. So what he/she is doing is not resolving anything, it is just to annoy everyone around them. Guess what, it’s working. No one likes you. You won.

I did a bit of research behind when to use your car hooter (or horn), took my a few seconds but I found this:

Q: When can a hooter be used?

A: Regulation 310A of the National Road Traffic Act regulates the use of a motor vehicle’s hooter. The Act states that you may not use your hooter on a public road except where you are directed to do so or on grounds of safety. So, all those people hooting unnecessarily are actually doing so illegally! – Source http://www.womenonwheels.co.za/tips/random-facts-regarding-traffic-rules-might-want-know/

“Unless directed to do so or grounds of safety”. I wonder how unsafe someone has to be feeling when they use it in traffic because life is just too inconvenient at that specific time.

This makes me wonder however, how would traffic and noise pollution be affected if car hooters had a limit each day or week or month? Let us say this:

The average car user in the week Monday to Friday drives their car twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. So they would be in their car 10 times in the week (which is kind of sad, cars cost a lot of money, petrol and maintenance), Since the law states that unless directed or safety comes into play, you could limit the horns usage to say 10 for the week or 20 if you’re feeling generous.  Weekends a car is used at any time, so I’d pool that in with the allocated 20 then.

In addition,if someone use the hooter repeatedly in short succession it would get softer after each use. With the way cars are being built these days, I think it could be done. Most cars functions are regulated by a computer and software parameters.

I believe that limiting usage would allow drivers to think twice about creating noise needlessly on the road, thus alleviating some of the stress being on the road. Driving already sucks, we don’t need people to make it worse. Personally I hardly use it as I find no real need and the times you really feel like you want to use it, it’s mainly in anger and frustration.
